Hardware refreshes are a common practice when it comes to video game consoles. From the Playstation t to the Playstation 5, from the Nintendo Wii to the Nintendo Switch, and from the Xbox 360 to the Xbox One X. Every console has had a quiet hardware re-release that alters the parts inside the console in order to address efficiency concerns or to plug up security exploits. Recently, it has been rumored that Microsoft plans to do the same with their current Xbox Series X line of consoles.
According to an inquiry by gaming journalist Brad Sams over on his YouTube channel, a user asked Brad regarding a rumor that Microsft has been planning to re-release the Xbox Series X with a smaller, more power-efficient chip that could run software with the same performance as the first generation Xbox Series X consoles, but with less heat and energy consumption. In regards to the user's comment, Brad went on to state the following:
Article Continues Below“I believe this is true. I know that Microsoft was working on revisions of the chip. Microsoft is always working on revisions of the hardware. You got to remember that while the console has out for around 18 months, the console that they built was signed off on about 12-14 months before it shipped. In the world of technology, the console is already a “dated design”.
Now, are we going to see performance improvements, are we going to see anything else? I do not believe so but Microsoft is always working on making cooler, more efficient chips because that lowers the cost of production.”
While it is unlikely that Brad himself has any insider knowledge regarding the creation of a power-efficient Xbox Series X, his sentiments in regards to the user's question are plausible. At the time of this article, no official statement has been made by Microsoft officials to confirm whether or not a hardware refresh for the console is currently in production.
