MultiVersus launches on both console and PC platforms after nearly a year of hiatus from the gaming market. Back in 2023, Warner Bros. and Player First Games decided to shut down their free-to-play fighting game temporarily. While the game seemed ambitious when it was first released, there was a lot of content that seemed to be lacking. This resulted in a backlash among fans and the game immediately lost its player base.
With the launch of MultiVersus, the developers are hopeful that the changes and new features they added could save their game. Having that said, here's what players can expect from the game's relaunch in the gaming market.
What to Expect from the MultiVersus Launch
Warner Bros. and Player First Games launched MultiVersus on the PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC via Epic Games and Steam on May 28. 2024. The base game from two years ago is back with the addition of new features.
New Characters
First of all, new characters are headed to the game's launch day. These are inclusive of Agent Smith, Banana Guard, Jason Voorhees, and The Joker. Their addition expands the roster to a total count of 25 fighters.
New Game Modes
Back when the game first came out, players complained about the lack of replayability. While most fighting games aren't safe from becoming repetitive, MultiVersus already had that problem when the open beta first came out. The developers took the criticism constructively and ultimately decided to shut down operations to rework the game. Now back on console and PC platforms, there are a plethora of new modes to keep players busy.
The free-to-play fighting game now has a new PvE mode known as Rifts. This mode features a variety of AI battles for players to learn the ropes of the game. Eventually, players will take on challenging boss battles to put their skills to the test. Each match comes with a corresponding unique reward to make the PvE mode worthwhile.
It's worth noting that Rifts can be played either solo or with friends. They can head into other PvE modes such as the 2 vs. 2 co-op mode and the 4-player free-for-all co-op vs. AI. Alongside these game modes are the original selection of online lobbies, The Lab where players can practice and sharpen their skills, and local play matches supporting up to four human players.
New Maps
New content keeps on coming as the developers also added several new maps for players to fight in. For instance, Dexter's Laboratory now comes in two variants. Obviously, one of them is the classic map with Dexter's Lab in the background. The newer one, on the other hand, features a more dynamic way to fight against other characters as players can now side-scroll to extended parts of the map while messing around with built-in gadgets that are surely going to stir up more chaos during a match.
Next is the City of Townsville wherein players still participate in an all-out brawl with a twist. Players will be pitted against each other on top of the Mayor's white house. While fighting each one, Mojo Jojo will attack everyone with a bunch of different weapons while riding his flying saucer. What makes the map unique is that players have the option to help each other take out the Power Puff Girls' arch-enemy while still trying to take each other out. Getting rid of the evil monkey will obliterate a portion of the map while the match continues.
As of the time of this writing, it isn't known if Player First Games and Warner Bros. studios will come up with new characters and maps in the months to come. For now, fans can enjoy the launch of MultiVersus now filled with new content to play around with.
