Germany’s home fans were rabid in the opening game against Scotland, which undoubtedly impacted their victory. Hungary looked shaken at times in their first game, so the home-field advantage in Stuttgart may cause them some more issues. It is time to continue our Euro 2024 odds series with a Germany-Hungary prediction, pick, and how-to-watch.

Germany’s quest to win their first Euro tournament since 1996 started well with a 5-1 domination of Scotland. Their victory was the biggest opening-game margin of victory in the tournament’s history. Germany used goals from Florian Wirtz, Jamal Musiala, Kai Havertz, Niclas Fullkrug, and Emre Can to start the tournament hot. Winning the group is crucial for Germany, putting them in the best position for the knockout stage. Scotland played most of the game with ten men after a spikes-up challenge from Scotland earned them a red card. Germany’s only goal allowed was from Antonio Rudiger’s own goal.

Hungary slipped out of its tactics in the first half, making uncharacteristic mistakes that put them behind in this match. Hungary’s coach, Marco Rossi, feels they won’t do it again, but it won’t get any easier against Germany. Dominik Szoboszlai’s debut had a sour beginning, as the youngest captain at the tournament failed to generate much offense other than an assist on Hungary’s 66th-minute goal. Hungary’s bid to be the tournament’s Cinderella is likely dead after the loss to Switzerland unless they can keep this game close.

Why Germany Will Win

Hungary had a clear game plan going into the tournament. They needed to keep their matches in an even or positive game state, as it all falls apart when they fall behind. We saw that happen against Switzerland, a team with nowhere near the same offensive talent as Germany. Hungary struggled with set pieces and allowed the fifth-most counterattacking shots/90 in qualifying.

Hungary won’t perform well with good defensive game plans against Szoboszlai. Switzerland shut down Szoboszlai efficiently, and a solid German game plan will render Szoboszlai a non-factor. Germany had no problems running the score up against Scotland, as they were already up 3-0 before the red card. Hungary isn’t close to the same defensive unit as Scotland, and you can expect another German onslaught here.

Why Hungary Will Win

It’s hard to find a reason to back Hungary in this matchup. Their tournament could be over before it starts with the loss to Switzerland, and they could be devastated after the disappointing loss. Hungary’s positive is owning the biggest game-breaker in this match and likely the group with Szoboszlai. A miraculous individual effort from the 23-year-old could get Hungary an early lead, and we’ll see if Hungary can excel in a positive game state.

Final Germany-Hungary Prediction & Pick

Germany could dominate this match, and their moneyline odds don’t offer substantial value. The Over is worth a look in this match, as there’s a possibility that Germany covers the 2.5 line by themselves. If they don’t, Hungary’s star could break through and get a late goal like their 66th-minute goal against Switzerland. Regardless, Germany scored five goals against Scotland and should come close to that against Hungary.
