The San Francisco Giants missed the playoffs and decided to part ways with manager Gabe Kapler. Now, the Giants are headed towards hiring San Diego Padres manager Bob Melvin after he was allowed to interview with the team, per Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic.

‘After a swift interview process, they are poised to announce the hiring of Bob Melvin, sources briefed on the matter told The Athletic on condition of anonymity.'

So, Melvin leaves the Padres and returns to the Bay Area, this time as the Giants manager.

The Giants finished the season with a disappointing 79-83 record, and the Padres finished at 82-80 after a strong finish to the season, albeit far from where they expected to go after another massive offseason frenzy.

Melvin was with the Oakland Athletics for a decade but was then allowed to come to take the Padres job prior to the 2022 campaign, so he only spent two seasons in San Diego. Nonetheless, his time as the Padres manager seemed to be reaching an end due to reports about his rift with GM AJ Preller, although Preller stated that Melvin would return in 2024.

Where the Padres turn now remains to be seen, although there were a couple of internal candidates that popped up, and clearly they have some idea of where to go after an abysmal 2023 season. But, the Giants get Bob Melvin, who was rumored to be the leading candidate all along, and he returns back to Northern California after two years in Southern California and stays in the National League West.
