New York Giants quarterback Drew Lock is reaffirming his role as backup on the team to Daniel Jones. Lock has received support from many fans to be the team starter, but he doesn't want to step on any toes. Lock was even asked by reporters if he was the most popular quarterback on the team.

“I wouldn’t say that,” Lock answered, per NJ.com. “I would say I appreciate the people that respect my game and know what I can do, but you’re the backup, and you’re here to help Daniel.”

This line of questioning appears to be déjà vu for Lock, who also commented weeks ago that he wasn't trying to steal the starting role from Daniel Jones. Lock has reiterated time and again he wants to play a supporting part for the Giants. The quarterback was recently signed to the team from Seattle.

“Three years I wasn’t a starting quarterback I was patient then,” Lock added. “I know how to be a backup, and just be ready if and when your time comes. As a backup, you hope it never comes, you hope the team’s playing good football. You hope Daniel stays healthy, but do everything you can to be ready, and when that time comes, just make the best of it.”

Lock in the NFL

Lock has played a supporting role for the last few years in the NFL. He didn't record any stats during the 2022 season, with the Seattle Seahawks. In 2023, the quarterback finished with 543 passing yards, with three touchdowns and three interceptions. He backed up Geno Smith with the Seahawks.

Lock had his best season statistically in the league when he was playing for the Denver Broncos in 2020. That year, the quarterback finished with 2,933 passing yards. He also threw 16 touchdowns that season, but did throw 15 interceptions. Lock played with the Broncos from 2019-2021.

The quarterback was a second-round NFL Draft pick when he entered the league in 2019. Lock hasn't found as much success as he would have liked, with 28 total touchdowns to 23 interceptions in his NFL career with the two teams. He played his college football at Missouri, where he was a First-Team All-SEC Selection in 2017. He was also the FBS passing touchdowns leader that year.

The Giants are looking to rebound from a difficult 2023 season. The team finished with a 6-11 record, and has struggled in recent years to match the same success they had with Eli Manning and Tom Coughlin. The Giants have only one playoff appearance in the last five years, during the 2022 season.

The Giants are giving the keys to the offense once again to Daniel Jones, who has had some bright spots with the franchise. He finished the 2023 campaign with just 909 yards, but was injured with a torn ACL. In 2022, Jones led the team to the playoffs and threw for more than 3,000 yards. Giants fans hope to see that side of Jones again during the 2024 campaign.
