Regardless of how the quarterback situation panned out for the New York Giants in the 2017 NFL season, one thing became abundantly clear. The Giants need to start thinking about their future without quarterback Eli Manning.

As a result, there is plenty of speculation that New York will be looking to find their next franchise signal-caller in the 2018 NFL Draft. However, general manager Dave Gettleman is not exactly ready to commit to drafting a quarterback just yet, according to Dan Salomone of the team's website:

“With the second pick, we’re going to take the best player,” Gettleman told the team’s official website. “They screamed at me in Carolina, ‘You’ve got to draft a tackle, you’ve got to draft a tackle.’ If the value’s not there when you pick, you’re going to make a mistake. You’ll make a mistake. We’re going to set ourselves up so that we can take the best player available. And if the best player available is a quarterback, then that’s what we’re going to do.”

The Giants will have the second overall pick in the upcoming draft, meaning they are in a prime position to acquire one of its best quarterback prospects. Among the notable names have been Southern Cal's Sam Darnold, UCLA's Josh Rosen, and Wyoming's Josh Allen.

However, it seems Gettleman will not be willing to settle for any quarterback other than the one they feel is their next franchise player. While it may not be a popular decision with fans, they'll just have to trust that their new GM knows what he's doing when it comes to evaluating who that best player is.
