There is a hurdle for the New York Giants in their attempt to sign tight end Kyle Rudolph. New York medical staff is worried about the status of Rudolph's foot after he underwent a physical examination and the staff believes he will require surgery, according to Mike Garafolo of the NFL Network. Both parties are in talks on how to move forward.

It was reported a few days ago that the Giants signed Rudolph to a two-year, $16,000,000 pact. The move received mixed reactions. Rudolph is a two-time Pro Bowler, who can be counted on to make key catches and be impactful in blocking. From the 2015 to 2019 seasons, he managed to play in 16 games each season, a testament to his durability.

Adding Rudolph, if the Giants can manage to do it, can help an anemic offense that had the second-fewest points and yards in the league. He would be an additional target for quarterback Daniel Jones and provide openings for running back Saquon Barkley, who will be returning from an ACL injury.

However, Rudolph has not looked so good as of late — it wasn't enough to dissuade the Giants from signing him, but people around the NFL certainly noticed. Last season, he only played in 12 games due to injury, his catch percentage decreased and he even had lost a fumble for the first time in his professional career. These coupled with the emergence of Irv Smith, Jr.  made the Minnesota Vikings part ways with Rudolph.

It would be a blow to the Giants' offseason if the deal with Rudolph does not push through as they could have pursued other targets instead. The free agent market is quickly drying up and tight end is not one of the strong points of the upcoming draft.

The Giants have to have an answer for a Dallas Cowboy team which has Dak Prescott back at quarterback, and a Washington Football Team which has upgraded under center with Ryan Fitzpatrick.
