Markus Golden racked up 10 sacks with the New York Giants this past season and figured to see a rather big payday in free agency. It hasn't come yet.
Earlier this week, the Giants slapped an unrestricted free agent tender on Golden, meaning the linebacker will remain with New York on a $4.1 million salary if no one else signs him before July 22.
Of course, that's a lot of time for a double-digit sack guy to sit out on the open market, but if he does remain unsigned, he'll be back with the Giants, and new head coach Joe Judge is happy about the potential of that occurring:
“Obviously, we think he’s a talented player,” Judge said during an appearance on WFAN, via Danny Abriano of SNY. “He’s been a great locker room guy. I have a lot of respect for him from afar — I haven’t worked with him in person yet. We did what we thought was best for the team in terms of using tags. … I’m not gonna go into the contract part of it. I’m excited about the prospect of talking to Marcus [and] see where it goes from there.”
Golden, who played his collegiate football at the University of Missouri, was originally selected by the Arizona Cardinals in the second round (58th pick overall) of the 2015 NFL Draft.
The 29-year-old spent his first four seasons with the Cardinals, with his best year coming in 2016 when he totaled 51 tackles, 12.5 sacks, and four forced fumbles.
New York went 4-12 in 2019.
