New York Giants star rookie running back Saquon Barkley followed up his impressive (but not to Eli Manning) 39-yard run in his very first carry against the Cleveland Browns with another fine play in practice Monday. However, he came out a little banged up in the process.
Barkley caught a long pass from fellow rookie Kyle Lauletta down the sideline with his fingertips. But after the play, he went to get checked out by members of the team’s medical staff, per NorthJersey.com.
Barkley was then seen with an ice pack wrapped on his left leg, although it was off by the time he and his teammates left the field.
After the session, Giants head coach Pat Shurmur told reporters he didn’t see what happened with Barkley, but he believes it’s nothing too serious.
“Think he’s all right, we’ll find out,” Shurmur said.
UPDATE: Barkley tweaked his hamstring, deemed fine by ESPN's Dianna Russini's source.
Barkley and the Giants go to Detroit on Tuesday for joint practices with the Lions ahead of their preseason matchup on Friday. Hopefully for Barkley and the Giants, his leg will be just fine by then.
But if the star rookie shows any lingering signs of that tweak in the coming days, the team will likely take extra precaution in order to avoid further damage.
