The New York Giants added a big piece to their offensive line this offseason with Kevin Zeitler, who came over from a trade with the Cleveland Browns. And the veteran has already made an immediate impact on second-year guard Will Hernandez.
Hernandez has praised Zeitler’s teaching skills as he’s imparted his wisdom onto the younger players on the team.
“He's been phenomenal, not only as a player but as a teacher, too,” Hernandez said per the team’s official website. “He's taught a lot of young guys, including myself, a lot of technique. He was one of the top pass protectors in the league last year, so he definitely has a lot to offer and he's passing it on to the young guys, myself also, and we're really glad to have him.”
Hernandez was one of the bright spots in an otherwise disappointing season for the Giants in 2018. The second-round pick started all 16 games, and with Zeitler’s guidance, figures to get better in Year 2.
On paper, the Giants’ offensive line figures to be one of the better units in the league. With Hernandez and Nate Solder on the left side and Zeitler and fellow offseason acquisition Mike Remmers on the right, the O-line has the potential to be a real strength for the team.
Having an improved line will be a huge help for veteran quarterback Eli Manning, who will need added protection as his mobility continues to decline. Meanwhile, it should also help second-year running back Saquon Barkley and the running game.
