The first two rounds of  The Open Championship 2021 had been middle-of-the-road for Rory McIlroy, but he woke up feeling dangerous Saturday and started Round 3 like a house on fire. McIlroy, who scored a 70 in both Round 1 and Round 2 pulled of not one, not two, not three, not four, but five birdies on the front nine of Round 3.

Rory McIlroy birdied on the par 4 first hole to open things up. He also went a shot under par in par 4, 6, 7, and 9. As of this writing, the Nothern Irishman is tied for 37th place on the leaderboard with a total score of 1-under par with the likes of Viktor Hovland, Max Homa, and Justin Thomas among others.

McIlroy still has some significant catching up to do, but at least he's safely made it to the weekend unlike at Royal Portrush in 2019 when he started with a devastating score of 79 in the first round. He had a sensational Round 2 that year with a score of 65, but that was not enough for him to avoid his second missed cut in The Open.

Since he started playing at The Open Championship in 2007, Rory McIlroy has collected a total of five top 10-finishes, which includes his win in the 2014 edition of the tournament at Royal Liverpool. He was also tied for second in 2018 at Carnoustie.
