Former Cleveland Browns head coach and current Grambling State Tigers coach Hue Jackson made headlines for his questionable decision to hire Art Briles as his offensive coordinator. Briles, formerly at Baylor, was coaching at the university during a time where there were many cases of sexual assault against players on his team. This resulted in Briles' firing from Baylor, though he was cleared by the NCAA. He was recently brought in as Grambling State's offensive coordinator by Jackson, who released a letter defending Briles via his foundation. Not only Jackson, but Grambling State received backlash as well for the hiring of Briles. The coach made a shocking decision on his coaching future with the Tigers amid the backlash, as reported by USA Today Sports.

A Grambling State spokesperson told the News-Star on Monday that Briles had resigned but offered no details.

“Thank you for giving me the opportunity to be part of your coaching staff at Grambling State University,” Briles said in a statement. “Unfortunately, I feel that my continued presence will be a distraction to you and your team, which is the last thing that I want. I have the utmost respect the university, and the players.”

Art Briles, hired by Hue Jackson, has stepped down as Grambling State's offensive coordinator amid the backlash. In a statement, Briles was thankful for the opportunity but expressed the opinion that he would be a distraction to the team.

Briles is probably right about that, given that he was just hired four days ago and there was already a firestorm surrounding the university. Given the questions on morality that were bound to emerge, it's for the best that the team let Briles go.
