North Carolina A&T alumnus Kenneth Gorham is making headlines as the youngest principal of Movement Freedom Middle School, per a feature report by CNBC. Movement Freedom Middle School is a charter school located in Charlotte, North Carolina and Gorahm at 26 is the youngest principal in the school's history. He assumed the position at the age of 24 and was surprised when he found out he was one of the main candidates for the job.
“I’m like, this has to be too good to be true. This is unheard of,” Gorham said in a quote obtained by CNBC.
Gorham graduated from North Carolina A&T with a Bachelor of Science in Political Science and Government and was an active student leader on campus, holding six executive board positions in student organizations during his tenure. He started his career in education at Movement Freedom as a 4th-grade teacher, then ascended to the position of Principal in the 2022-2023 school year. Gorham had immense success as a teacher as his classes had the highest end-of-year test scores across his grade level.

“When I was approached by senior leadership to apply and interview for the role of principal, my ability to lead people stood out. People were able to follow me just based off of my rapport with them.”
Gorham sets a standard for education, as the National Center for Education Statistics reports that the average age of a school principal is 47. However, Gorham shows that age doesn't always indicate the capacity to lead and that your student leadership experience at an HBCU will always take you far.
