Miami Heat guard Dion Waiters will have to continue to wait to make his 2019-20 season debut as head coach Erik Spoelstra announced that Waiters would be inactive for Sunday’s contest versus the Brooklyn Nets. Waiters has been sidelined to this point in the season due to a team-imposed suspension.

Without Waiters in the mix, Miami has jumped out to a 13-5 start, which has them tied for third place in the Eastern Conference standings. The void that his absence has created has paved the way for rookies Kendrick Nunn and Tyler Herro to see additional playing time, which they have capitalized upon to become vital pieces of the Heat’s puzzle moving forward.

On Saturday, Waiters released a statement of public apology surrounding an incident that happened earlier this season when he consumed an edible on the team plane, which triggered a panic attack. He was handed a suspension stemming from that incident, one in which he has yet to return from.

Waiters has at least returned to the practice floor, although how soon the team will reintegrate him into their rotations remains to be seen. Even as the team entered the season with big plans for Waiters as an offensive asset, who he would siphon minutes from is unclear.

Miami has two games remaining on its current road trip, which will take place Tuesday and Wednesday in Boston and Toronto, respectively. In the midst of a four-year, $52 million deal, it’s unclear how Waiters and Miami will be able to proceed moving forward.
