The Charlotte Hornets have hit a skid over the last couple of weeks dropping six out of their last seven games pushing their record to 10-19 through the first 29 games played.

This downward trend has created a cloud over the team with what former All-Star center Dwight Howard has deemed as players holding their heads down. According to The Charlotte Observer, Howard has one simple but direct message that would like to convey to his teammates.

“Like I said, we’ve got to stop looking defeated, holding our heads down. It’s a long season, and we can turn this thing around, but our mentalities have to change.”

There was much optimism that the addition of Howard over the offseason could help push the team back in the right direction in the playoff picture. However, that has yet to be the case this season as the Hornets have struggled to find any consistency on both ends of the court.

Howard has been a source of reliability in his first campaign with the Hornets averaging a double-double of 16.1 points and 12.7 rebounds with 1.3 blocks per contest. Kemba Walker has also led the charge offensively averaging a team-best 21.9 points while notching 18 games with at least 20 points scored this season. Keep in mind, Nicolas Batum is still working his way back from an elbow injury that forced him to miss the first 12 games.

That said, it has reached a breakpoint for the Charlotte if they hope to make a serious playoff run. If things continue to trend south, it could put them entirely out of the postseason picture quite early in the season. This places a huge importance on how the Hornets will play over the next couple weeks with their playoff aspiration already in check.
