Despite the rocky year it has been at the box office, Inside Out 2 hit the ground running with a massively successful opening weekend and a much-needed win at the box office for Pixar. It is at the domestic box office, though, that Inside Out 2 has gotten to shine as it has taken the top spot for 2024 from Dune Part 2 in record time.

Emotional and Financial Success

Inside Out 2 kicked off its theatrical run in big fashion with a $154.2 million opening weekend haul, cementing itself as the biggest domestic opening of 2024 and being the first film of the year to cross $100 million on its opening weekend. Heading into its second weekend in theaters, Inside Out 2's success continued as the film domestic total had crossed $285 million, making it the highest-grossing release at the domestic box office for 2024 according to The Hollywood Reporter.

In the case of its opening weekend and total domestic haul, Inside Out 2 blew right past Dune Part 2 to take both number one spots for 2024. Dune Part 2 previously held the two number one spots with an $82.5 million opening weekend before topping out at the domestic box office with $282.1 million.

Inside Out 2 has done equally well internationally with a haul of $226.7 million as of Friday, bringing its worldwide total after only a week in theaters to around $512 million. This was enough to make Inside Out 2 the number four highest-grossing film of 2024 for the worldwide box office, with Dune Part 2 still sitting at number one with over $711 million.

Heading into its second weekend in theaters, Inside Out 2 is still projected to do big business as most projections have the film grossing somewhere between $93 to $103 million and once again take the number one spot for the weekend.

A Much-Needed Win

The film's box office success has also been a welcome win for Pixar, which hasn't had a major hit at the box office since 2019's Toy Story 4 grossed over $1.073 billion.

Like several studios, Pixar took a hit financially due to the restrictions put on most movie theaters during the COVID-19 pandemic from March 2020 until mid-2022. Onward, Soul, Luca and Turning Red would all release in that time and would either release solely on Disney Plus or have a joint release on the streaming service and in theaters.

The studio's first major release back solely in theaters would be Lightyear in June 2022 and would be met with generally positive reviews at release. However, the film struggled financially and would be considered a bomb after only grossing $226.4 million against a reported budget of $200 million.

Elemental would fare better when it released in June 2023, managing to gross $496.4 million over its theatrical run and became considered a sleeper hit.
