The Jacksonville Jaguars have released veteran running back Chris Ivory just two years into a five-year contract.

Per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network:

The Jaguars released RB Chris Ivory, who was inactive for most of the end of the season. The move creates more than $3 million salary cap space.

Ivory, 29, signed a five-year, $32 million deal with the Jaguars in 2016 following three years with the New York Jets and three with the New Orleans Saints. The guarantees in that contract have already been paid, and the Jaguars will save close to $4 million on their cap by releasing him.

Ivory rushed for 1,070 yards with seven touchdowns en route to a Pro Bowl selection with the Jets in 2015, which earned him the big contract with the Jags. However, he had a disappointing time in Jacksonville and came nowhere close to matching that career year. He rushed for just 821 yards with four rushing touchdowns over 25 games in his two seasons with the Jags.

Ivory had 382 yards and a touchdown in 14 regular-season games last season as he saw himself behind rookie Leonard Fournette on the Jags’ running back depth chart. The writing was on the wall for Ivory’s release as far back as a month ago. He was inactive for the team’s last two regular-season games and had just one carry in their three postseason games.

Even with Ivory’s release, the Jaguars still have TJ Yeldon and Corey Grant to back up Fournette for next season. Ivory might still garner interest around the league as an experienced backup. But as his two unsuccessful years in Jacksonville likely showed, Ivory’s days as a featured back appear to be over.
