The Jacksonville Jaguars have found their guy in Trevor Lawrence. He was the first overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, a class which was famously terrible for QBs. Lawrence has been a solid starter for Jacksonville ever since, and was recently inked to a massive contract extension. Trevor recently released a statement through the Jaguars about his new deal.

“I am beyond grateful to be able to continue my career in Jacksonville,” Lawrence said in a team statement on Friday via NFL.com's Nick Shook. “My family and I love this city – it has become home to us and this solidifies that even more. We can't thank Mr. Khan, and everyone involved for their belief in me. I know that the best is yet to come and this is only the beginning. The drive to bring a championship to Duval is bigger than ever. Let's get it done.”

The Jaguars handed Lawrence a five-year, $275 million contract that makes him one of the best paid QBs in the league. NFL insider Ian Rapaport reported that the deal includes $200 million in guaranteed money and Lawrence gets $142 million guaranteed at signing.

Jaguars owner Shad Khan posted the following statement on social media regarding Lawrence's extension.

Lawrence's $55 million average per year matches Joe Burrow as the richest contract in the NFL on an average annual salary.

Lawrence hasn't been as accomplished as many of the other highly-paid, but he has faced his own unique challenges. His rookie season was derailed by head coach Urban Meyer, who has a dysfunctional 13-game tenure in Jacksonville. Things have improved under Doug Peterson, but it has been a chore to rebuild the Jaguars into a competent roster.

Jacksonville is hopeful that signing Lawrence to a long-term deal with widen their window and give them a chance to become a contender in the AFC in the near future.

The 2024 NFL season will be hugely important for the Jaguars.

Just a few years ago, the Jaguars seemed on top of a weak division. Now, the AFC South is looking like one of the stronger divisions in the league.

CJ Stroud and the Houston Texans burst onto the scene last year and took the division by storm. They now have a starting QB on a rookie contract and are taking advantage by throwing money at the rest of their roster. The Indianapolis Colts flashed potential last year when Anthony Richardson was healthy. They could become a problem if he continues to develop. There are also the Tennessee Titans, who are beginning a new regime under former Bengals offensive coordinator Brian Callahan. They cannot be overlooked either.

The Jaguars face a tough schedule in 2024 and there are a handful of important games that could have a major impact on their season. Jacksonville heads to Houston in Week 4 and hosts the Texans after their Week 12 bye. The Jaguars likely need to win at least one of these games to stay competitive in the division.

Jacksonville also faces tough opponents in the Buffalo Bills, Detroit Lions, and the Miami Dolphins.

It will be interesting to watch the Jaguars duke it out with some of the NFL's best teams this fall.
