Jeff Fisher gets back at Bruce Arians for 8-8 comment, two years later

Jeff Fisher has been waiting two years to respond to a comment made by Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians.

On Sunday, Fisher and his Los Angeles Rams came away with an upset victory in Arizona, pushing their record to 3-1 while driving the Cardinals’ down to 1-3. In the aftermath, Fisher harkened back to a statement Arians made in 2014.

During Week 15 that season, the Cardinals topped the then-St. Louis Rams 12-6. Arizona’s record became 11-3 while the Rams’ dropped to 6-8. Arians took offense that his Cardinals were underdogs heading into that matchup.

From the LA Times’ Gary Klein:

“I love it when nobody says that you will have a chance to win,” Arians said. “There is an 11-3 team, and a team that is always 8-8. You figure it out.”

Following Sunday’s victory, Michael Silver of NFL.com asked Fisher what he told his players to pump them up before the game. Rather than give a generic response, Fisher was completely honest:

“I told them, ‘This was [the Cardinals’] Christmas present. We see them after Christmas [a Jan. 1 rematch at the L.A. Coliseum]. This was their Christmas present. We just gave it to them early, OK?'”

Fisher then confirmed that he used Arians’ past comment to motivate the Rams:

“Go back and see all the s— Bruce said against us a couple of years ago,” Fisher said.

It’s going to be very interesting in Week 17 when the Rams and Cardinals meet again at the Coliseum in Los Angeles. Especially if both teams are in contention, or the Cardinals have a chance to knock the Rams back to a 7-9 or 8-8 finish.
