Kamaru Usman is currently set to defend his UFC welterweight title against Colby Covington at UFC 268 on Saturday. Although he has his hands full with the matchup, that hasn't stopped him from eyeing other fights.
Kamaru Usman spoke with DAZN about what he wants next. He has his eyes set for the ring instead of the cage, he wants to box Canelo Alvarez.
“It only makes sense because we’re in an era to where people want to be entertained,” Usman told DAZN. “So, in order to entertain people, when have we in history ever seen the two pound-for-pound fighters in the world in combat sports at the top of their prime, when have we ever seen them compete? It never happened.”
Kamaru Usman wants Canelo Alvarez while both athletes are still in their prime. He doesn't want to wait for one of them to get old.
“Either man waits for the other one to get old,” Usman continued about the norm when it comes to crossover fights of this caliber. “It’s rarely ever really happened. But it’s either that both are out of their prime, both are old … it’s never been done.”
Kamaru Usman believes the event would be huge as it pits to greats in their primes. Even if Usman is an MMA fighter, he still believes he can box.
“In order for us to do that, this will be the greatest, the biggest event ever,” Usman said. “The two pound-for-pound fighters in combat sports at the top of their prime to get in there and duke it out, I believe will be probably the biggest event ever.”
The likelihood of the match coming together is very slim. Both fighters have contracts that will make things very difficult to negotiate.
