The 2018 batch of newbies in the NBA is an interesting group. It features a Slovenian hotshot who’s proven himself in the highest level of competition outside of the NBA in the form of Luka Doncic and a hulking seven-footer in Deandre Ayton, who is determined to be among the elite big men in the league right away. But for every Doncic and Ayton, there’s someone like Sacramento Kings center Harry Giles, who is often overlooked, partly because of a lack of publicity.
However, Giles has been getting rave reviews over the offseason. Although he missed the entire 2017-18 season because of health issues, he’s been showing immense promise and potential for a Kings team that is needing a shot in the arm following a season in which it finished with a pathetic 27-55 record.
Giles, who has long odds of +3,300 to win this coming season’s Rookie of the Year honors according to BetOnline.ag, scored 14 points and pulled down six rebounds to go with three assists in 23 minutes of action in the Kings’ 106-102 preseason opener win over the Phoenix Suns. Against the Golden State Warriors on Oct. 5, Giles came off the bench and chipped in 17 points and five rebounds in just 20 minutes, albeit in a 122-94 loss to the defending champions.

Giles is aching to prove himself in the pros, and his grand opportunity to do just that has finally arrived this year.
