Social media has turned into an important tool for NBA players and trainers to share workout videos, particularly in the summer and offseason, where either an empty gym or low competition affords players the opportunity to showcase their skills in a vacuum. This was perhaps highlighted best by former New York Knicks star Carmelo Anthony during his “Hoodie Melo” days. Now, the latest lottery pick of the Knicks, RJ Barrett, has a counter for his lack of workout videos.
Speaking to MSG Networks at the NBA's Rookie Photo Shoot held on Sunday, Barrett explained why he doesn't share those kinds of videos:
“I don't play that game, man, people don't need to know what I'm doing.
“My thing is I've never done that my whole life and I'm gonna stay true to that. I work out behind the scenes — nobody knows — you just see it on the court. That's it.”
The 6-foot-7 Barrett was selected with the third overall pick by New York in June's draft. He joined fellow Duke one-and-done teammates Zion Williamson (first, New Orleans Pelicans) and Cam Reddish (10th, Atlanta Hawks) in being drafted in the lottery portion of the 2019 draft.
RJ Barrett had a slow Las Vegas Summer League start in the NBA's showcase for young players and athletes trying to make a roster. However, roughly three games into his five-game Vegas journey, a flip switched for the 19-year-old, and the Toronto native displayed the skills that led to him being ranked first in college basketball heading into the 2018-19 NCAA season.
