Luol Deng just wants to play basketball in the NBA, but the Los Angeles Lakers simply hasn’t afforded him last season of a satisfactory playing time. The Lakers would love to trade Deng, though, the interest in him from other teams is scarce, if not non-existent.

Deng has a burdensome contract and an aging, damaged body that no team would like to have, but for former Lakers teammate Andrew Bogut, the Sudanese veteran can still play and contribute. Bogut expressed that belief on Twitter while also lamenting how unfairly he thinks Deng is being treated by the Lakers organization.

Deng has two more years left on his contract, one that would pay him $18 million next season and $18.81 million more in 2019-20. His contract eats a big space on the Lakers’ salary cap, but is also among the least productive member of the team. Last season, Deng played just a game, 13 minutes to be exact, for the Lakers.

The hope for Deng is that the arrival in Los Angeles of LeBron James, someone who’s known and frequently marketed as a player who maximizes the talents around him, will eventually slide him back into the Lakers’ rotation. Deng will have to work his way up the pecking order, though, as he’s behind Brandon Ingram and Lance Stephenson in the depth chart. The addition of Michael Beasley does not also bode well for Deng’s campaign to have a bigger role next season.
