Tyson Chandler was bought out by the Phoenix Suns on Saturday. After the news broke, the 18-year veteran was immediately expected to sign with the Los Angeles Lakers.
Following their huge 114-110 road win against the Portland Trail Blazers on Saturday night, Lakers forward LeBron James chimed in his thoughts on the looming addition of Tyson Chandler to their squad. The rest of the organization was reportedly reluctant to give comments on the news as the deal hasn't been finalized yet, but James was not shy, per Erik Gundersen of LeBron Wire.
“We love the fact that we’re going to get another veteran. A guy who plays hard, who is very smart and another champion. To add another champion to this group and it adds depth which we’ve struggled at times.” James said.
This is a nice get for a Lakers team lacking depth on the interior. Starting center Javale McGee is their only true big man getting consistent minutes at the center position. Head coach Luke Walton has been experimenting with some of their young prospects like Johnathan Williams and Ivica Zubac to spell McGee some minutes at center. However, he has not fully committed to giving them playing time.
Zubac came up big in the Lakers' victory against Portland, notching season highs of nine points and eight rebounds in 19 minutes off the bench. LeBron also spoke highly of the Croatian's readiness after the game, saying that he was terrific on the boards and finishing at the rim while McGee was on the bench.
Unfortunately for Zubac, he may not be able to ride the momentum he gained from his solid performance, as Chandler may be ahead of him on the depth chart.
