LeBron James is joining one of the most historic franchises in all of professional sports. He feels the Los Angeles Lakers are the best fit for him and his family. But that doesn't mean he didn't consider other options.
In fact, James discussed his decision and points out that he considered Cleveland, Philadelphia, and Houston before deciding that Los Angeles was the place for him.
“I did my due diligence after the season on pros and cons of a lot of different teams including the Cavs and including Philadelphia, including Houston and Los Angeles. So it wasn't as quick as it may seem. It just wasn't July 9 like it was before. After talking to my family more than anybody, I felt like this was the next step in my journey. And what my expectations are for the team, we don't have any right now. But we definitely want to be better than we were after the previous year, and we want to have championship (habits). You guys know me when it comes to championship habits, that doesn't mean you bring a championship, but it does mean you practice excellence every day. I expect that not only from myself but from my teammates. That's what Jeanie and that's what Magic and Rob want, that's what Luke is going to want, and we shouldn't sell ourselves short of that. I think there is going to be months where we're really good, there's going to be months where we're not so good and that's going to come from familiarity. We're all new to each other besides Ball, Ingram, Kuz, Hart, Zubac. I believe that's the returning class that's there, but everybody else is new to the system, so we'll see what happens with that. But as far us as, there's no reason that you become a Laker, you become a Yankee, you become part of Man U, you become part of some franchise or clubs and you don't think about winning championships or winning at the highest level. That's what the history is all about.”
James knows a thing or two about championship habits. He avoids making any bold predictions or declarations about the Lakers' chances to win a championship, but it's clear that he has championship aspirations in Los Angeles. James compares the Lakers to the Yankees and Manchester United Football Club.
All three are historic franchises built upon their winning ways. Of course, James is realistic in how he can achieve the goal of bringing a championship to Los Angeles. It's by developing championship habits. It may not happen immediately, but over time, James could help this team develop into a championship contender.
