Nearly four years ago, Steve Kerr and the Golden State Warriors made history by winning their 73rd game in a single season — setting the new regular-season record in the NBA. That moment on April 13, 2016, however, was largely overshadowed by another accomplishment: Los Angeles Lakers star shooting guard Kobe Bryant's final game.

Bryant, who was killed alongside 13-year-old daughter Gianna and seven others in a helicopter crash on Sunday (Jan. 26), scored 60 points on 50 shots. He miraculously led the Lakers past the Utah Jazz at the Staples Center to cap off his 20th season and a final farewell.

At the time, Bryant drew audiences away from watching the Warriors achieve the new regular-season benchmark. Head coach Steve Kerr recalled his reaction at the time of Bryant's ridiculous and perfect feat almost four years ago after the future Hall of Famer's sudden and tragic death (via Anthony Slater of The Athletic).

“I do remember it. It's exactly how it happened. We made history, we stayed out on the floor, it was a celebration on the court,” Kerr recalled.

“And then we all went into the locker room and the [Lakers] game was on and it was like — everybody's whispering — ‘Kobe's got 40.' And we watched the last few minutes, we watched as he racked up the points, watched his interview afterwards. Players were all watching on their side of the locker room, coaches were in our locker room … it was an incredible night.”

Alongside the Warriors' incredible feat, Kobe Bryant set a record that night with the most points and field goal attempts by a player in their final game. It was a fitting end to the Black Mamba's career, and one nobody who experienced it will soon forget even as the Lakers great was tragically taken from this world.
