As it turns out, the Los Angeles Lakers are no longer interested in trading for Jerami Grant from the Detroit Pistons. LA was one of the teams that were heavily linked to the Pistons star but apparently, the Lakers have now decided to end their pursuit for Grant.

According to Eric Pincus of Bleacher Report, the primary reason behind the Lakers' change of heart stems from Grant's unwillingness to play as a third option behind LeBron James and Anthony Davis:

“I’ve actually heard Lakers have passed on Jerami Grant. He doesn’t want to play a tertiary role behind Bron/AD,” Pincus said on a recent episode of the NBA Chat podcast (h/t NBA Central on Twitter).

To be fair, Grant has established himself as a real star in Detroit over the past two seasons. Apparently, he's more than happy with being his team's primary option on offense and has no intention of playing behind LeBron and AD in LA.

Grant is one of the most coveted names heading into the trade deadline and this recent development could indicate what type of mindset the 27-year-old currently possesses in terms of a potential move away from Detroit. He's reportedly unwilling to play a “tertiary role” but does this mean he's willing to be a second option for his new team? If not then he's probably going to end up staying in Detroit. At this point in his career, I just don't see Grant being a cornerstone stud for a legitimate championship contender.

As for the Lakers, the general belief was that their odds of landing Grant in a blockbuster trade were slim to none anyway. LA reportedly offered Talen Horton-Tucker, Kendrick Nunn, and a future first-round pick for Grant, but the Pistons turned down the deal. The Lakers do not have too many trade chips available and they are expected to have a difficult time in trying to lure in a star-caliber player to Hollywood prior to the February trade deadline.

Nevertheless, this won't deter LA from still being active in the market in the coming weeks. With Grant reportedly out of the picture now, it will be interesting to see where the Lakers turn their attention to.
