The New York Liberty take on the Atlanta Dream. Check out our WNBA odds series for our Liberty Dream prediction, odds, and pick. Find out how to watch Liberty Dream.

The New York Liberty knew that after playing a home game on Saturday afternoon, they would have to hop on a plane to Atlanta for a mid-afternoon game on Sunday. It's really baffling as to why the WNBA not only has teams playing back-to-back games, but has the back end of these double-stacks as a mid-afternoon contest. Schedules have their constraints, so it's accepted that on a few occasions, teams will need to play games on consecutive days. As long as that doesn't happen often, it's reasonably acceptable. However, there's really no excuse for the league (any league) to have a back-to-back with day game on the back end. The first game should be early afternoon and the second game should be at night. Yet, that did not happen here (or in the case of another WNBA game on Sunday between Dallas and Washington, who both played Saturday afternoon and will play again Sunday afternoon). The Liberty finished their Saturday game versus the Los Angeles Sparks around 5 p.m. Eastern time. They needed a few more hours to take care of postgame obligations. They have less than a 24-hour turnaround for this game against the Dream. It is the obvious point of intrigue in terms of who will win this game and in terms of which team will cover the spread. We will discuss this point more in the sections below.

Why The Liberty Can Cover The Spread/Win

The Liberty beat the Los Angeles Sparks easily and comfortably on Saturday, taking a lead of more than 22 points in the third quarter before downshifting and coasting home with the win. However, for bettors who had action on that game, the Liberty's comfortable win might not have gone down very well. The Liberty were 12.5-point favorites the night before the game. The line moved a few points to the Liberty before the start of the game, so a lot of people had tickets anywhere from New York -12.5 to New York -15.5. The Liberty looked like they would cover the spread late in the third quarter, but their fourth-quarter decline could reasonably be seen as the product of needing to conserve energy, knowing this Sunday game was around the corner.

You might be thinking this is a reason to not bet on the Liberty against the spread. On the contrary: Because the Liberty conserved so much energy against Los Angeles, they should be relatively fresh. Starters got a breather in the fourth quarter so that New York could lock in on this game. The Atlanta Dream were battered by the Indiana Fever at home on Friday night. They have not been a good team in recent weeks. The Liberty should be able to win comfortably, even if you allow for the lack of rest.

Why The Dream Can Cover The Spread/Win

The Dream have to be embarrassed after getting run out of the building by the Indiana Fever. The Dream have lost twice to the Fever in recent weeks. The Fever are obviously getting better, but the Dream have looked really bad at times in the month of June. Given that the Liberty should be tired and less than fully sharp after their plane flight and short turnaround, the Dream — who did not play on Saturday — should be able to bring a lot of energy to the court and stay close enough to cover the spread.

Final Liberty-Dream Prediction & Pick

The Liberty are miles better than the Dream, but the travel situation really makes it hard to calibrate likely outcomes. Definitely wait for a live-play opportunity here.
