Since his retirement from the NFL nearly two years ago, there hasn't been a strong relationship between former star wide receiver Calvin Johnson and Detroit Lions. Much of this has dealt with his decision to step away from the game while still playing at an elite level that caused the team to not necessarily treat Johnson in a proper manner.

During Johnson's Return to Greatness Flag Football Camp on Saturday, he briefly discussed his relationship with the Lions stating giving some sense of optimism that both sides can hash things at some point down the line, according to Geoff Robinson of The Detriot News:

“We’ll see how that goes,” Johnson said when asked whether he thinks he’ll have a favorable relationship with the team in the future. “But I’m not here to talk about the Lions at all. I understand folks want to talk about the Lions, but that time has passed for me and I’m moving forward.”

There had been some uneasiness from Johnson after the team had attempted to get him to pay back some of the signing bonus from his last contract with the team to which he paid back $1 million of that bonus to the Lions after his decision to step away from the game.

This has created a strained relationship between both sides that have lingered on with Johnson remaining firm that he isn't going to make a comeback. It has been a situation that doesn't appear to have any timetable to it being resolved at any point in the near future, but Johnson's comments do lend to him being willing to get things straightened out eventually.

Ultimately, this is something that should work its way out due to the impact he made on the franchise during his nine years in Detroit where he put together a Hall of Fame-worthy career where he was one of cornerstone player throughout the ups and downs. It may just be a matter of time before this situation is worked out.
