The Detroit Lions were hoping Sam LaPorta would be a strong TJ Hockenson replacement when they selected the tight end in the second round of the 2023 NFL Draft. In his rookie season, LaPorta has shown the Lions he can be much more than just a replacement.

LaPorta caught a two-yard touchdown pass early in Detroit's Week 18 matchup against the Minnesota Vikings. It marked his 82nd reception of the season, which broke Keith Jackson's record of 81 he set in 1988, the team announced. LaPorta also tied Rob Gronkowski for the second-most receiving touchdowns by a rookie tight end.

The Lions have already won the NFC North. Their matchup against the Vikings is more of a playoff tune up than a must-win affair. Still, Week 18 gave LaPorta another opportunity to prove his value to Detroit. While he may be a rookie, he certainly hasn't disappointed.

Heading into Week 18, LaPorta had caught 81 passes for 860 yards and nine touchdowns. He was second on the Lions behind Amon-Ra St. Brown and tied with the wide reciever for the team lead in touchdowns. Unless St. Brown finds the end zone against the Vikings, LaPorta will end the regular season as Detroit's leader in touchdown passes.

The Lions got plenty of flack for going heavy on offense in the 2023 NFL Draft. They took a running back in Jahmyr Gibbs in the first round before LaPorta. However, those gambles have paid off, as Detroit has one of the more dynamic offenses in the NFL.

Sam LaPorta has played a massive role in helping the Lions get to the top. As Detroit prepares for the postseason, LaPorta will be writing his name in the record books in red ink.
