A Monopoly film is coming, and Lionsgate has made a major decision regarding it.

Monopoly movie incoming

On December 27, it was announced that Lionsgate closed its deal to acquire eOne from Hasbro. This means that over 6,500 film and TV titles will be added to the studio's already-massive catalog.

Included in this deal are the film development rights to Hasbro's Monopoly brand, meaning Lionsgate is now free to develop a film based on the popular board game.

“The eOne acquisition concludes a busy year in which we continued to execute our strategy of strengthening our studio business as we prepare for the separation of Lionsgate and STARZ into pure play standalone companies,” Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer said.  “As we've conducted our integration planning, our analysis has reaffirmed our conviction that eOne will be a valuable and highly accretive addition to our business. We are pleased to welcome eOne's talented group of employees to our Lionsgate family.”

Monopoly was first created in 1935. The board game involves buying and trading various properties, developing them as the game goes on. There has yet to be a true Monopoly film made, though a documentary, Under the Boardwalk: The Monopoly Story, was released in 201. Shazam! star Zachary Levi narrated it.

Lionsgate has had a busy year. They are the studio behind several successful franchises including the Hunger Games, John Wick, Twilight, the Expendables, and Saw.

This year, their slate included Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret, About My Father, Joy Ride, John Wick: Chapter 4, Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre, and Expend4bles. They also released The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes as well as Silent Night.
