Why The Mariners Will Cover The Spread/Win
Bryan Woo takes the mound for the Mariners, and he has been extremely impressive this season. Woo has walked just two batters all season, and he is not allowing hits, either. This means Woo not only has elite command, but his stuff is very good, as well. Woo rarely gives up a barrel, so his average exit velocity is pretty low too. The Guardians have the second-lowest barrel percentage at the plate, so I am expecting plenty of weak contact in this game. If Woo can continue pitching as he has been, the Mariners will win this game.
The Guardians are also a team that will chase pitches. They have the sixth-highest chase rate in the MLB. Now, they do not swing and miss a lot, but Woo should be able to get them to chase in order to generate that weak contact. With his command, Woo can throw any pitch in any count anywhere in the zone. He should have no problem executing his pitches and getting the Guardians to chase. If this happens, expect the Mariners to win.
Why The Guardians Will Cover The Spread/Win
Bibee has done a great job striking out batters this season. This is great news as the Mariners lead the MLB in strikeouts by a large margin. Along with this, the Mariners have the third-highest whiff rate, third-lowest chase contact percentage, and second-lowest zone contact percentage. The Mariners will swing and miss, and they get in trouble because of it. Bibee has to take advantage of this. If he can continue his ways of striking batters out, the Guardians will win this game.
Bibee has one of the better sliders in the MLB. It has a whiff rate of 35.1 percent, an oBA of .131, and an average exit velocity of 84.2. The slider is arguably his best pitch, and the Mariners are going struggle against it. With Seattle's tendency to chase pitches, Bibee's slider is going to cause a lot of trouble for the Mariners. If that pitch is one in this game, expect Bibee to shut down the Mariners.
Final Mariners-Guardians Prediction & Pick
I would not be surprised to see a lower scoring game in this one. I am fully expecting both pitchers to shut down the opposing team. With it being a lower scoring game, I like the Guardians to outlast the Mariners. I will take the Guardians to win this game straight up.
