Marvel Rivals is now in Closed Alpha after only a little over a month since the game's announcement. Marvel and NetEase revealed back in March that they plan on launching a free-to-play third-person shooter game in the near future. The near future might come sooner than later due to the Alpha being live. However, while hype surrounds Marvel's shooter game, the Alpha players aren't thrilled with NetEase's terms of service (ToS).

Prominent Twitch streamer and former professional esports player A_Seagull recently ranted on social media regarding Marvel Rivals' ToS. He uploaded a portion of the contract sent to him by NetEase revealing how the developers asked them to refrain from making pessimistic remarks.

The section of the contract reads:

“The Content Creator agrees not to make any public statements or engage in discussions that are detrimental to the reputation of the game.”

This prevents content creators from engaging in any kind of public debate discussing the game's overall performance. They're forced to refrain from giving critical comments and comparing the game to other similar titles. The streamer expressed disappointment and noted that many other content creators most likely signed the contract without reading it. He feels that the developers blindsided them.

Ironically, Marvel Rivals' official Discord channel's FAQs state that they encourage players to make honest reviews. With that said other creators are likely to make negative remarks. However, given the current circumstances, it'll be difficult to do so.

One other player known as hzjoe gave his two cents as well. The Twitch streamer said he brought this issue to the developers' attention on the official Discord channel. The team mentioned revising the contract, which they ended up doing.

NetEase Apologizes for Marvel Rivals' ToS

After Marvel Rivals' ToS went viral online, NetEase apologized to their community in their Discord channel. They clarified that they are aware of the misleading terms they used in the contract. The developers also recognized there was a major miscommunication and apologized for any inconvenience this caused the content creators.

NetEase said that they're open to both positive and negative comments as it's meant to help them make significant improvements to the game. One of their missions is to guarantee a pleasant experience for players with constructive opinions. With that said, they are currently working on revisions to the contract. They didn't disclose when exactly they plan on releasing a new contract but they mentioned notifying the current player base as soon as possible.

On top of correcting their mistakes, the developers also plan on coming up with a suggestion form. This now allows players to give their feedback wherein the developers hopefully consider listening to.

As of this writing, the developers didn't clarify if the current signed contracts are now void. But given what has taken place, it's not completely out of the question.

Given the current circumstances, it's safe to say that at least players who are still waiting for their turn to play Marvel Rivals won't have to deal with false reviews leading up to the game's launch date. Unfortunately, there currently isn't an official release date for the game. However, if we compare Overwatch's Alpha phase back in 2015, it only took around five months until the full release. Hopefully, the game follows the same pattern. All players can do for now is patiently wait for NetEase's announcement.
