Rory McIlroy had an eventful first round at the 2021 Masters, struggling to a 76 to sit well behind leader Justin Rose. As part of this 4-over round, McIlroy even hit his dad in the back of the leg with an errant shot on the seventh hole.

McIlroy had an awkward approach shot on the hole and pushed it wide:

Gerry McIlroy joked that he “should ask for an autographed glove,” per Phil Casey of PA Media, and Rory couldn't help but make a wisecrack about it as well:

“I think he just needs to go put some ice on it,” McIlroy said after his round. “Maybe I’ll autograph a bag of frozen peas for him.”

Hitting his dad en route to a first-round 76 was certainly not the way Rory McIlroy envisioned things going on Thursday in his attempt to complete a career grand slam. His best finish at the Masters came in 2015 when he finished in fourth place. His last major victory came at the PGA Championship in 2014.

McIlroy entered the Masters ranked 12th in the Official World Golf Ranking. He's just 33rd on the money list in 2021 and hasn't won a tournament since November 2019, so he's trying to find himself.

Rory McIlroy will try to turn things around when he tees off for his second round later on Friday. Rose is already starting to come back to the pack after his scorching-hot 65 in the first round, so there's an opening for a run here at the 2021 Masters.
