Monster news made waves in the NBA today as Kristaps Porzingis was sent packing by the New York Knicks to his new team, the Dallas Mavericks.

Porzingis will be teaming up with Mavericks rookie sensation Luka Doncic and the duo is already giving Mavs head coach Rick Carlisle déjà vu.

Comparing the two players to legends in Dirk Nowitzki and Steve Nash is a tall order, but not totally unfounded. Dallas’ two young European players have immense talent and their games even model the classic Mavericks pair.

Similar to Nash, Luka has an incredible IQ and understanding of the game already and he is just 19 years old.

In his first year in the NBA, Luka is averaging 20.4 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 5.4 assists. Hitting 35.4 percent of his 3’s, he may not be the perimeter threat that Nash was, but he certainly has the ability to create his own shot and isn’t shy in getting buckets when his team needs him.

As Carlisle pointed out, Doncic has a little more size to offer than Nash did, raising his ceiling as a defender.

Much of Porzingis’ game is modeled after Dirk, who pioneered an era of faceup stretch big men.

Porzingis is one of the best big shooters in the league today, having shot 39.5 percent last season with the New York Knicks. Kristaps still has some work to do in order to be as legendary as Dirk is as a 3-point shooter, but KP already looks like he will be a better rim protector and could have a little more of an inside game as well.

Only time will tell if the Mavs young pair will end up as successful as their hall of fame comparisons, but it is certain that Dallas has their hands on something special in both of these players.
