The upcoming Captain America 4 (Brave New World) reportedly has a ballooning MCU budget. There was a recent report that the budget has gone up to between $350-$375 million which contradicts a recent report from The Hollywood Reporter.
World of Reel was the outlet to report the ballooning budget. They reported that the current reshoots will cost between $75 and $100 million. The budget for the MCU movie allegedly reached $275 million before reshoots.
“It's like they're shooting a brand new movie,” a source told World of Reel.
If this is true, this contradicts a previous report from The Hollywood Reporter. On May 31, 2024, THR reported that Captain America: Brave New World was undergoing a 22-day reshoot period. Among the new scenes being shot are “some new action sequences.”
Their report also reassured that this was the only period of reshoots that the movie underwent. Also, it isn't as extensive as Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness' (six weeks long) or as “expensive and extensive” as The Marvels. An insider told THR that Brave New World will cost “significantly less than The Marvels overall.”
It is important to take all of this with a grain of salt. The only people who know how expensive the movie is are the filmmakers and studios involved. When it comes to ballooning budgets, Fast X is a great example of that. The budget exceeded $453.6 million.
Disney and Marvel Studios will need Captain America 4 to be a big hit if its budget is as big as the reports indicate. The MCU is coming off a rough 2023 with box office disappointments Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and The Marvels both underperformed.
What is Captain America 4 about?
The upcoming Captain America 4 is Anthony Mackie's first full adventure in the title role. He was previously given the mantle at the end of Avengers: Endgame. The Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier depicted his journey to fully earning it.
The plot for the movie is being kept under wraps. However, it is known that Danny Ramirez (Top Gun: Maverick) returns from Falcon and Winter Soldier as Joaquin Torres. He is the new Falcon.
Also starring in the movie are Carl Lumbly, Tim Blake Nelson, and Shira Haas. Harrison Ford makes his MCU debut in the movie as Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross. The role was previously played by William Hurt until death in 2022.
Ford is best known for playing iconic characters such as Indiana Jones and Harrison Ford. This is his first Marvel movie, though.
Another major return is Liv Tyler as Betty Ross. She is the daughter of Thaddeus and has not been seen in the MCU since The Incredible Hulk, the franchise's second movie.
Giancarlo Esposito is also set to make his MCU debut in Captain America 4. After being fan-casted as Professor X for years, Esposito was cast in the franchise. However, the role he is playing has not been disclosed and fans will have to wait until the movie to know who he is playing.
After just one MCU movie coming out in 2024 (Deadpool and Wolverine), Captain America 4 kicks off a year of four feature films. Thunderbolts, The Fantastic Four, and Blade will follow in May, July, and November, respectively.
