As Marvel Studios continues to re-find its footing, Captain America: Brave New World is set to get back in front of cameras for reshoots to get the film ready for its early 2025 release. The reshoots isn't the only bit of big news for the next Captain America film, though, as Giancarlo Esposito is now set to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Esposito was confirmed to be joining the cast of Captain America: Brave New World on Friday, ending nearly a month of fan speculation after he was confirmed to be joining the MCU. He will reportedly play one of Brave New World's villains, according to The Hollywood Reporter, though Marvel Studios appears to be keeping the character's identity under wraps.

The stage and screen veteran had previously teased his new role in the MCU and what is in store for his mysterious character.

“The MCU has knocked on my door and it's a role you won’t predict,” Esposito told fans during a convention appearance in May. “It will be teased and there will be a series afterwards.”

The MCU isn't the first sandbox under Disney's umbrella Esposito found himself in, either. Within Star Wars, he has appeared as Moff Gideon across The Mandalorian's three seasons on Disney Plus as one of the series' overarching villains. It is not known, though, if Esposito will return for The Mandalorian and Grogu.

His casting coincides with the start of Brave New World's scheduled reshoots that will run for roughly 22 days across late May and most of June. While little is known about what the reshoots will entail, several new action sequences are reportedly being filmed.

A New World, A New Cap

The reshoots also follow what has been a rocky year for the next Captain America film set to feature longtime MCU star Anthony Mackie in his first theatrical outing as the hero following the Disney Plus series Falcon and The Winter Soldier.

Principle photography originally wrapped in Spring 2023, though post-production was almost immediately interrupted by the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes that began in June 2023. The strikes forced high-profile films from various studios to be delayed as a result, including Brave New World and several other Marvel Studios projects originally scheduled to release in 2024.

As post-production picked back up on the film near the end of 2023, reports started to emerge of disappointment with early cuts and screenings of Brave New World. These coincided with reports of larger concerns within Marvel Studios due to various off-set issues, such as Jonathan Majors' convictions, and the disappointing critical and box office performance of several recent releases, including The Marvels and Secret Invasion.

Brave New World has since reportedly undergone some retooling as a result of larger reworks within Marvel Studios, and the film's scheduled reshoots are set to be shorter and more cost-effective than other recent MCU releases such as The Marvels.

Captain America: Brave New World is scheduled to release in theater on February 14, 2025.
