The Phoenix Mercury made a few key roster moves this offseason, one of which was the addition of Kahleah Copper. Copper was acquired by the Mercury in a trade with the Chicago Sky in a deal that also included Morgan Bertsch heading to Phoenix and Michaela Onyenwere and Brianna Turner going to the Sky. The Mercury recently held their media day and Copper gave her honest thoughts on joining a new team.

“From an organizational standpoint, I have everything. All I have to worry about is being the best version of myself on the court, and that is all that I should worry about,” Copper said. “As you pour into your players, you get what you put in. I think that's what this organization has done for me. I don't have to worry about food, that is something that I should not worry about.”

“Whether it's before practice or after practice, I know that I'm taken care of. So I think from an athlete standpoint and from where I am in my career, I am so grateful to be a part of an organization like this.”

Kahleah Copper joins the Mercury as a three-time All-Star and the 2021 WNBA Finals MVP. This past season she averaged a career high 18.7 points per game, 4.4 rebounds and 2.0 assists with splits of 44.8 percent shooting from the field, 40.4 percent shooting from the three point line and 77 percent shooting from the free throw line.

Mercury retool roster ahead of 2024 WNBA season

Coming into the 2024 WNBA season, the Phoenix Mercury, the hosts of the 2024 WNBA All-Star Game, will look a little different than they did last season. For starters, they have a new head coach at helm in Nate Tibbetts. Tibbetts doesn't have any WNBA coaching experience. He spent the last two seasons as an assistant coach with the Orlando Magic in the NBA. Prior to that he was an assistant with the Portland Trail Blazers and Cleveland Cavaliers.

Also joining the Mercury is veteran point guard Natasha Cloud. Cloud signed with the Mercury as a free agent after spending the first eight seasons of her career with the Washington Mystics. One of the top defensive players in the WNBA, Cloud was a key member of the Mystics 2019 championship team.

This past year, Cloud had the best season of her career statistically. She averaged a career high 12.7 points per game, 3.7 rebounds, 6.2 assists and 1.1 steals with splits of 37.7 percent shooting from the field, 29.8 percent shooting from the three point line and 90 percent shooting from the free throw line.

The Mercury also added sharpshooting wing Rebecca Allen in a sign and trade with the Connecticut Sun. Allen shot 34.8 percent from three point range last season with the Sun.

In addition to their reinforcements, the Mercury will have Brittney Griner and Diana Taurasi back in the fold and veterans Sophie Cunningham and Sug Sutton. They also had a solid draft adding UCLA's Charisma Osborne and Nebraska's Jaz Shelley. Both were third round picks but have the potential to be key contributors from the get-go.
