The New York Mets are gearing up for the playoff race with a pair of trades. After first acquiring slugger Daniel Vogelbach from the Pittsburgh Pirates, the Mets are hitting up the Pirates to add another piece.

According to Jon Heyman of MLB Network and later confirmed by the team, the Mets acquired 29-year-old catcher Michael Perez from the Pirates in exchange for cash.

Perez has 16 hits, including six home runs, and a triple-slash line of .150/.209/.318 in 39 games with the Pirates this season. Although his hitting is subpar, his defense has been solid throughout his career. With starting catcher Tomas Nido dealing with a hand bruise, the Mets are getting another veteran to provide depth behind the plate.

New York trading for a catcher is a bit of a confusing move. Although the Mets absolutely need help at the catcher position, they have not called up top prospect Francisco Alvarez. His outstanding hitting abilities may not immediately translate to major-league action but he should still provide more value than any of New York's other options.

Fortunately, New York has the option to send Perez down to the minor leagues in Nido returns or James McCann, who has been dealing with an oblique injury, is able to get back into action soon.

New York is leading the NL East by just 1.5 games. The Atlanta Braves are right on their tail as August, and the trade deadline, approach. Expect the Mets to make some more moves to help them get back to the postseason.
