The New York Mets are amid an intense matchup with the Los Angeles Dodgers, but the team is being hit with untimely woes. After putting Edwin Diaz on the injured list from a shoulder ailment, the Mets have lost Pete Alonso's services from a right hand injury, per David Lennon. Alonso exited the game to get treatment. Hopefully, the injury is not too serious and he can get back on the diamond for New York's pivotal matchup.

Alonso was unfortunately hit by a pitch during his first AB. The Mets are hoping the shot he took does not result in any lingering problems. The 29-year-old is an integral part of New York's offense, and they need him to overcome the tough competition in the NL East.

Through 54 games, Pete Alonso bats a .231 average, has hit 12 home runs (tied for 11th in the league), and is responsible for 26 RBI with a .758 OPS. He entered the 2024 season with hopes of helping the Mets improve upon their woeful performances from the prior year. However, New York has more to worry about than their play at the moment.

Not long before Alonso exited the game, it was announced that Edwin Diaz would be joining the IL due to a shoulder impingement. The star closer's production has not resulted in the success he wants the Mets to have. Yet, his presence is still valuable.

Diaz amassed five saves, held a 5.40 ERA, and threw 30 strikeouts on 1.25 WHIP in his 20 appearances. His exact recovery time is not known, but he will be out for the foreseeable future. Challenges continue to pile up for the struggling Mets; yet, they have time to gain momentum and turn things around.

Mets look to turn the tide amid tough Pete Alonso injury

New York entered Wednesday evening's Dodgers matchup with a 22-32 record, placing them second-to-last in the NL East standings. The Mets look to end their LA series on a positive note after dropping their first two matchups.

Of course, things will not be easy with the offensive and defensive might the Dodgers are bringing. Los Angeles is led by none other than two-time AL MVP Shohei Ohtani. Ohtani boasts top-five rankings in batting average and OPS. Losing the defensive resistance of Edwin Diaz hurts New York's chances against Ohtani and the rest of LA's offensive contributors.

However, the Mets still possess stout competitors in Luis Servano and Reed Garrett. If the two pitchers can hold their ground, New York might be able to slow LA's offense. Moreover, veteran second baseman Jeff McNeil believes the Mets have it takes to win despite the team's recent losses.

“We've got good players in this room. We've lost a lot of close games, every game we play has been close. We haven't been getting blown out. Unfortunately, we're finding ways to lose right now. We have a lot of those games where I feel like we should come out on top. We're not,” McNeil told SNY after Tuesday night's loss.

“We're a much better ballclub than what we're playing right now. I think we know that and it's tough. We want to go out there and perform and we aren't right now,” McNeil added.

If the Mets stay positive, they can find success despite being plagued by injuries and cold play.
