The New York Mets' big free agency splashes show that they want to get back on top of the National League East. One way they're looking to do that is poaching one of the best players from their division rival, the World Series-winning Atlanta Braves.
ESPN's Buster Olney reported on The Michael Kay Show that the Mets have inquired about first baseman Freddie Freeman. The 2020 NL MVP and five-time All-Star doesn't seem to be guaranteed to return to the Braves, even after they won it all, because the organization is lowballing him in contract talks.
“There’s a perception in the industry that Freddie Freeman is not going back to the Braves. Last summer, that was assumed, like ‘Yeah, eventually he’ll go back there.’ Now, they don’t believe that, and here’s an interesting thing. One of the teams that checked in on the Freddie Freeman availability before December 2nd were the Mets.”
Although the Mets already have a first baseman in Pete Alonso, signing Freeman still makes sense. The two sluggers could alternate between first base and the designated hitter spot, which will be implemented in the 2022 season. Freeman also has some experience playing third base, which could be used to allow Robinson Canó to play DH.
New York still needs some power in its lineup. Freeman would be a strong addition for the Mets and a brutal loss for the Braves. His hitting would galvanize a team that badly needs it and bring some championship pedigree.
