One area of the game that the Michigan football team has especially excelled in during recent years is the run game. A big reason why the Wolverines have had so much success there is because of the offensive line. In the past three seasons, the Michigan offensive line has won the Joe Moore Award for the best offensive line in college football two times. The only year that they didn't win it was last year when Washington won it. The Wolverines beat the Huskies in the national title game, and Michigan had 303 rushing yards. Washington had 46.

Michigan football wants to keep up this dominant rushing attack, but it will be difficult in 2024 after all they have lost. That entire offensive line from last year is gone, and the Wolverines have a new offensive line coach. Grant Newsome is now leading the unit, and Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore has a lot of confidence in him. In fact, he thinks that he'll be a head coach soon.

He's more than ready,” Sherrone Moore said of Grant Newsome, according to an article from 247 Sports. “That dude is a beast. He'll be a head coach in another a couple years too. He's phenomenal. For a guy that's his age, he's way, way out of his age from a mental standpoint, from what he knows, his maturity, how he handles everything. He's a superstar in this business, so he's more than ready, absolutely.”

Newsome played college football for Michigan from 2015-2018. He is very familiar with the culture that the Wolverines have and he knows how to be successful in Ann Arbor.

Michigan football obviously lost a lot in terms of their offensive line, but Sherrone Moore doesn't seem to be too concerned about it. He has confidence in Grant Newsome, and he is confident that this is once again going to be a strong unit for the Wolverines.

“The O-line should be good,” Moore said. “Obviously, we lost guys, but the years before we lost guys, so that's gonna happen. Trevor and Zinter couldn't play there for 10 years — even though they probably wish they could. But we're feeling really good about the guys that we got, and the little battles within each group. But the mindset, the foundation of who we are and what that group is, is in that room. Ready to see what the next guys do.”

It feels like the offseason started, but we are less than three months away from college football. We will get our first look at this new o-line on August 31st when Michigan opens the season at home against Fresno State.
