It appears an exhibition fight between boxing legends Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield is in fact happening.
Previous reports from Holyfield's camp suggested Tyson turned down a proposed fight between the former champions. However, Tyson has since said the fight will be happening on May 29 in Miami:
“I just want everybody to know the fight is on with me and Holyfield,” Mike Tyson said during an IG Live session with Haute Living, per TMZ. Holyfield's a humble man I know that and he's a man of God but I'm God's man. Listen, I'm going to be successful May 29.”
Tyson also revealed during his IG Live session he and Holyfield just had to resolve a “small fundamental difference” and finish paperwork. Holyfield's camp had said Tyson wanted an enormous sum of money and turned down $25 million guaranteed:
“We thought this was a done deal but it quickly fell apart when Tyson’s people declined all offers,” Holyfield’s manager Kris Lawrence stated, via MMA Fighting. “We were negotiating in good faith all along and it appears we just ended up wasting our time.”
The rivalry between two of the best heavyweights of all-time is one of the most notorious in boxing history.
Evander Holyfield met Mike Tyson in the ring for the first time in November of 1996, winning the fight in the 11th round via TKO. The two met again seven months later, when Tyson famously bit off a piece of Holyfield's ear.
Both fighters have reconciled over the course of the years. However, Holyfield saw fit to call out Tyson after “Iron Mike” squared off with Roy Jones Jr. last November.
It is clear conversations are being had. But there has yet to be confirmation from both sides regarding completion of a deal.
