The New York Yankees could find themselves embroiled in a sign-stealing scandal within as little as seven days. The Yankees Letter, an infamous document that has been sealed by courts that allegedly contains evidence of sign-stealing being covered up by MLB and Brian Cashman, is set to be released next Thursday, per Evan Drellich of The Athletic. The Yankees had been appealing an initial court ruling to unseal the letter but were denied in their efforts, meaning the notorious letter is set to be released to the public in a matter of seven days when the court case officially concludes.
Obviously, this could have serious consequences for the Yankees. It's impossible to forget how brutally the Astros were lambasted amid their sign-stealing scandal. Given the overall dislike of the Yankees across the league, should there be a bombshell report hidden behind the seal of the document, mayhem is set to ensue.
Yankees president Randy Levine commented on the decision via CBS Sports.
“We're disappointed in the Court of Appeals' decision, but we respect it,” Levine said. “But I believe that it's going to lead to a lot of unfair results down the road.”
Part of the reason the Yankees were appealing the release of the letter was the team felt it may harm the reputation of the organization, though that only furthered fans' interest as to what was hidden within the document. There is some belief the document contains proof the Yankees engaged in sign-stealing antics of their own, including the improper use of dugout phones.
Whatever is truly unearthed from the document, it's certainly something the Yankees don't want getting out. Unfortunately for them, all their stalling has come to an end and the letter will be made public on Thursday.
