San Diego Padres -1.5 (-125)

Los Angeles Angels +1.5 (+104)

Over 9 runs (-108)

Under 9 runs (-112)

Why The Padres Could Cover The Spread

The Padres are 60-69 against the run line this season. However, in non-league games, Jayce Tingler and co. cover 84.6% of the time, which is the best in the MLB under such circumstances.

San Diego plans to give Joe Musgrove his 25th start of the season. The right-hander is 8-8 on the season and has an ERA of 3.41. Musgrove threw six innings in his last time out, surrendering just one earned run and two hits while earning a total of nine strikeouts.

The Padres offense has performed the best on the road this season. On the year, they average 4.62 runs per game. However, when playing away from home that number notches up to 5.0 runs per game, the fifth-best in the majors.

Individually for the Padres, it is all about Fernando Tatis Jr. The National League MVP favorite is batting .281, has 35 home runs, 24 stolen bases, and leads the league in OPS with a 1.003 rating. The 22-year-old has four home runs in his last six road games.

Why The Angels Could Cover The Spread

The Angels are 58-71 against the run line this season. However, after a loss, that number sees a decent increase. The Angels cover 50.8% of their games after losing their previous match.

Due to a surplus of injuries, the Angels are uncertain of who will be the starting pitcher. The candidates are Left-handers Packy Naughton and Jose Quintana and right-hander Aaron Slegers.

Quintana has started in 10 games this season. In those games, he is 0-3 and has a 6.75 ERA.  Slegers has made 29 relief appearances for the Angels this season and has a 6.97 ERA.  Naughton has only pitched for one inning this season, in which he allowed one earned run.

The Angels are a middle-of-the-pack team offensively. They average 4.54 runs per game and have a .250 batting average. That said, when the Angels can generate power from the plate, they typically come away with the win. According to Playpicks.com, they have won 30 of the 44 games this season in which they hit two or more home runs.

While the Padres have the National League MVP favorite, the Angels have the American League MVP favorite in Shohei Ohtani. The two-way superstar leads the league with 41 home runs and has the fourth most RBIs up to this point the season with 89. In his last game, he went had a home run and an RBI in just two at-bats.

Final Padres-Angels Prediction & Pick

The Padres have struggled in the second half of the season and are just 2-10 in their last twelve games. However, the Angels have not been playing any better, and with Musgrove on the mound, San Diego will have the advantage in the earlier innings.

Fans could be in store for a potential firework show as Tatis and Ohtani face off against one another for the first time. Both teams have trends that favor the over.

The Padres have gone over in 10 of their last 10 games against an American League opponent. Meanwhile, the Angels have hit the over in five of their last seven games and the total has gone over in 38 of Los Angeles' last 60 home games.

FINAL PADRES-ANGELS PREDICTION & PICK: Padres -0.5 First Five Innings (-142 )
Bonus bet: Over 9 (-108)
