The Giants and Padres come into this game on complete opposite streaks. It’s the third of a four-game series on Wednesday evening in San Francisco. It’s time to continue our MLB odds series and make a Padres-Giants prediction and pick.

While the Giants have won four games in a row, the Padres have lost five consecutive contests. The Giants continue to lead the NL West while the Padres have fallen out of the playoff picture. The Giants are a World Series contender, while the Padres are showing they are everything but that.

Here’s how the bookmakers have set the lines for Wednesday’s game.

San Diego Padres (-112)

San Francisco Giants (+102)

Over 8 1/2 runs (-105)

Under 8 1/2 runs (-115)

Why The Padres Could Win

Since July 29, Joe Musgrove has been one of baseball’s best pitchers, aside from a couple of rough starts. In this eight-start span, he has posted a 2.50 ERA. However, this includes one bad start in Arizona in which Musgrove allowed six earned runs. But he has also had five starts in this span allowing one run or less. On August 27 in Anaheim, Musgrove tossed a nine-inning, complete-game shutout, allowing just three hits and striking out nine batters. If anyone is going to will the Padres out of their slump, it’s Musgrove, who has been the Padres best pitcher all season. This is really a must-win game for San Diego, who now finds themselves on the outside looking in of the NL Wild Card race. Look for Musgrove to dominate based on his recent success,  even though his starts against the Giants at the beginning of this season were far from ideal.

Why The Giants Could Win

Simply put, the Giants are the hottest team in baseball right now, winners of nine consecutive games. They lead the NL West over the Dodgers (who have the league’s second-best record) by 2 1/2 games, and they just clinched a playoff berth already this week. This matchup may seem to go against the Giants as they have pitcher Dominic Leone starting in an opener role. Leone should be expected to pitch just an inning or two before the bullpen takes over. But even in short relief and short starts, Leone has been dominant all season. He has posted a 1.41 ERA in 44 2/3 innings this season, including a two-inning start versus the Padres on Monday in which he allowed just one hit and zero runs. The Giants pitching staff and bullpen has been incredible all year, so look for both a shutout outing by Leone, as well as a spectacular performance by the bullpen. With a Giants offense that has been among MLB’s best all season, this game should easily go the Giants way.

Final Padres-Giants Prediction & Pick

I’m very, very surprised that the Giants are underdogs in this game. I was going to pick them anyway as favorites, so now as underdogs, they are one of the easiest bets I’ve made all season. The Giants offense will get to Musgrove, but even if it’s only a few runs, the Padres have looked flat lately and won’t be able to put up runs against Leone and the Giants bullpen. The Giants win this game, 4-1, as they extend their winning streak to ten games and push the Padres further out of the NL playoff race.

FINAL PICK: Giants moneyline (+102)
