The San Diego Padres and the Colorado Rockies will kick off a three game series on Monday. It's time to continue our MLB odds series and make a Padres – Rockies prediction and pick.

This is a huge series for the Padres. San Diego has rapidly fallen behind in the NL West, trailing the first-place San Francisco Giants by ten games.  The Padres needs to start consistently winning games against poor teams like the Rockies if they want to keep their hopes of catching the Giants and the Los Angeles Dodgers alive. The Rockies would love to play a little bit of spoiler and bury the Padres even deeper in the NL West by taking this series from them.

Here's how the bookmakers have set the lines for Monday's matchup.

Why The Padres Could Cover The Spread

The Padres have one of the best offenses in the MLB, and they just got some reinforcements. Superstar shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. returned from the IL on Sunday and promptly hit two home runs while playing right field for the first time. The addition of Tatis makes this lineup so much deadlier, so Rockies starter Antonio Senzatela will have his hands full throughout this matchup.

Senzatela has had a pretty rough season, posting a 4.71 ERA and a 1.43 WHIP. Those are both poor numbers, and the Padres contributed to them when Senzatela faced San Diego earlier this season. The Rockies starter pitched five innings while giving up four runs. It's fair to expect the Padres to put up plenty of runs early on against Senzatela.

Why The Rockies Could Cover The Spread

Colorado has been one of the worst offenses in all of baseball this season, but for some reason they seem to have an easy time hitting Padres starter Ryan Weathers. Weathers has faced the Rockies twice this season, with one outing lasting two innings while the other lasted four. Over that span, Weathers allowed eight runs to the lowly Rockies.

It's fair to expect another terrible outing from Weathers, especially when taking into account his recent stretch of starts. Over his last seven appearances, the lefty has posted an 8.67 ERA and a 1.89 WHIP. Those are downright terrible numbers, and they indicate that even the Rockies should be able to put up plenty of runs.

Senzatela has some less-than-inspiring numbers on the season, but there is some reason to believe that he can put together a good outing. The righty allows a surprisingly low walk rate of 5%, and only allows a barrel percentage of 6.1%. Those are great numbers to have against a Padres lineup that specializes in drawing walks and hitting for power.

Final Padres – Rockies Prediction & Pick

The lines make this a great opportunity to pick an upset. The Rockies are facing a pitcher who hasn't pitched well in weeks, and Senzatela matches up fairly well against this San Diego offense. There's a good chance that Senzatela outplays Weathers and the Rockies take the first game of this series.

FINAL PICK: Colorado Rockies ML (+118)
