The Padres took Game 1 of the series last night as they host a doubleheader on Saturday. It's time to continue our MLB odds series with a Rockies-Padres prediction and pick.

Joe Musgrove inserted himself as the NL CY Young favorite at this point in the season with yet another quality start. Musgrove now leads the MLB in wins (7), ERA (1.50), and quality starts (11). The San Diego native is dominating in his second season in a Padres uniform and the team is benefiting from it, going (36-22) to start the season. If the Friars win both of their games on Saturday and the Los Angeles Dodgers lose, then the Padres would jump the Dodgers by half a game in the division.

As for the Colorado Rockies, they continue to struggle as they are (25-33) on the year. They have lost seven of their last 10 games and have fallen to fifth in the NL West Division. They got shut out last night and hope to quickly get back on track with two games today.

The game we will be focusing on for today is the second of the double header that is scheduled for 7:10 PM Pacific Time. However, we will provide the odds for both games.

Why The Rockies Could Cover The Spread

Kyle Freeland is scheduled to get the start in the second game tonight. The lefty is (1-5) on the season with a 4.53 ERA in 59.2 innings pitched. He's been consistent but has pitched against this lineup a lot in his career. His key will be to limit Manny Machado and Luke Voit who hit lefties very well.

The offense did not show up against Musgrove last night as not many teams have. Tonight they face a rookie who is also pitching very well to start the season. The Rockies will hope that during the first game of the DH they can get their bats going. The Rockies finished with just five hits last night so unless they see success in the first game then the second game doesn't have very favorable odds.

C.J. Cron, Charlie Blackmon, and Ryan McMahon need to be the three that get this team going. With Kris Bryant on the IL, the lineup doesn't have much consistency. Only Cron, Yonathon Daza, and Jose Iglesias are batting over .285 on the season and that hasn't been enough to generate many wins lately.

Why The Padres Could Cover The Spread

MacKenzie Gore is slated to start the second game and he has pitched very well to start his career. The southpaw is (4-1) on the season with a 1.50 ERA, identical to Joe Musgrove. Gore is currently around five innings shy of being eligible in the rankings. That number could change after this outing but he is no doubt the early NL Rookie of the Year favorite. He hasn't allowed a run in his last two outings and three of his last four. Those games were against good teams like the Milwaukee Brewers and Philadelphia Phillies.

Going against a lefty as well, the Padres may rest some lefty hitters in the lineup on the second of a DH. Eric Hosmer, Jake Cronenworth, Nomar Mazara, and Trent Grisham have been playing a lot recently so who knows what manager Bob Melvin will issue. Those four are all starting in the first game of the DH at 1 pm.

Expect Manny Machado to try and lead the team as he is batting .371 at home this season with six home runs. He smashed one last night in the 7-0 victory and his .332 average overall is 6th in the MLB.

Final Rockies-Padres Prediction & Pick

For the second game tonight, I'm rolling with the Padres to cover the spread. The Friars know they are close to the Dodgers in the standings and could have a chance to jump them with two wins on Saturday.

Final Rockies-Padres Prediction & Pick: Padres -1.5 (+106)
