Los Angeles Angels superstar Shohei Ohtani is a highlight machine, which is probably the least you can say about him. Nevertheless, Ohtani put on a show again on Sunday when he helped the Halos score a 7-5 victory against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
It did not take Shohei Ohtani long before he had everyone's attention. After the Pirates got on the board first with a Bryan Reynolds in the top of the first inning, the Angels responded right away, with Ohtani unleashing a solo home run of his own in the bottom of the frame to tie the game up, 1-1.
Like many baseball fans, Angels manager Phil Nevin was left in awe by Ohtani's home run.
“I don’t know if I’ve seen a ball hit like that — a golf ball maybe,” Nevin shared following the win over the Pirates (h/t Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com).“I thought he lined out to center. I really did. Or maybe it gets over his head or hits the wall. But it disappeared into the trees. Every day, he does something different to impress you.”
In the last Angels home game before the 2023 MLB trade deadline, Shohei Ohtani went 2-for-3 with a run and a walk.
With his first-inning bomb, Shohei Ohtani now has 36 home runs — the most in the majors. He is also hitting. 302/398/.674 and is on pace to finish the regular season with 58 home runs.
The Angels have been on fire since the MLB All-Star break, as they have won six of nine games. Up next for Ohtani and the Halos is a three-game date with the Detroit Tigers that starts this Tuesday at Comerica Park.
