Jacob Anthony deGrom was born on June 19, 1988, in DeLand, Florida, to Tony and Tammy deGrom. His father was a lineman for AT&T while his mother was a customer service representative for a credit card rewards program.
He is the youngest of Tony and Tammy’s children; his sisters are named Sarah and Jessica. His father built him a batting cage in the backyard where he could practice and Jacob credits Tony for his intensity and humility.
He attended Calvary Christian Academy in Ormond Beach, Florida, where he was a member of the school’s basketball and baseball teams.
He was named to the All-Florida Second Team in his senior year and he also played in the American Legion Baseball where he was noticed by the coaches of Stetson University.

In the 2010 MLB Draft, the New York Mets selected Jacob deGrom with the 272nd overall selection in the ninth round. He signed with the Mets with a one-year $95,000 deal. He was then assigned to the Kingsport Mets of the Rookie-level Appalachian League. After six starts, he was diagnosed with a partial tear of the ulnar collateral ligament in his pitching elbow that caused him to miss the entire 2011 season.
The following year, he played for the Savannah Sand Gnats of the Class A South Atlantic League and the St. Lucie Mets of the Class A-Advanced Florida State League where he made a total of 19 starts and finished with a 2.43 earned run average.
Aside from that, he played for a couple of teams before being called up to the major league such as Binghamton Mets of the Class AA Eastern League and the Las Vegas 51s of the Class AAA Pacific Coast League.
On May 12, 2014, Jacob deGrom was promoted to the New York Mets after pitcher Gonzalez Germen was placed on the disabled list. The Mets initially planned to use him as a relief pitcher, but an injury to Dillon Gee allowed him to be inserted into the starting rotation.
On September 15, 2014, the New York Mets faced the Miami Marlins and Jacob deGrom struck out the first eight batters, tying the MLB record. He was then shut down for the year by the end of the season as he finished with a 9-6 record, a 2.69 ERA, and 144 strikeouts.
Jacob deGrom was awarded the Sporting News National League Rookie of the Year after receiving 26 first-place votes out of 30. He became the first Met to receive the award since Dwight Gooden in 1984.
The following year, he was selected as part of the National League squad in the 2015 MLB All-Star Game. He proceeded to strike out three batters he faced on ten pitches, making him the first person to achieve the feat since pitch counts were recorded.
deGrom then set a Mets franchise record for most strikeouts in the postseason with 13 during their 2015 National League Division Series match-up against the Los Angeles Dodgers. They proceeded to defeat the Dodgers to advance to the NL Championship Series where they defeated the Chicago Cubs to book their ticket to the 2015 World Series.
Unfortunately, the New York Mets failed to defeat the Kansas City Royals. Despite that, Jacob deGrom received the Wilson Defensive Player of the Year Award as the best defensive player in his position in the MLB.
Before agreeing to a long-term contract with the Mets, Jacob deGrom signed multiple one-year deals worth $500,000 (2014), $556,875 (2015), $607,000 (2016), $4.05 million (2017), $7.4 million (2018), and $17 million (2019).
The New York Mets and Jacob deGrom eventually agreed to a five-year $137.5 million extension with a $10 million signing bonus during spring training in 2019.
In that year, he was named to his MLB All-Star selection and he finished the season with 2.43 ERA and a league-leading 255 strikeouts. He was named to his second consecutive NL Cy Young Award as the best pitcher in the National League.
